A Venetian-era town on the Slovene coast, about two hours from Ljubljana. It's extremely picturesque and obviously very touristy. The cheapest flat for sale was half a million euros for a pretty small space. It's dominated by small alleys, large plazas and seafood restaurants.
Sights & Culture
Tartini Square
The main square is expansive, with a small farmers market in the centre and a statue of a local musician.
Piran Lighthouse and Our Lady of Health Church
Arguably the world's only combined lighthouse and church, there's something appropriate about a church also offering a signal to save the lives, not just the souls, of sailors. The back facing the water is high stone, to keep the lighthouse safe, with the doors facing a small courtyard away from the water.
The Mermaid
A stone mermaid sits on the stone bulwark around the island. Not huge, she's facing inwards with a carved face on the stone next to her, hidden slightly by the rocks.
Restaurants & Bars
Fritolin Pri Cantini
Seafood dominates all the menus, but here in particular. I had the vegetable tortially as there was almost no other option that wasn't some kind of seafood and I really dislike seafood. Perhaps not the best choice of locations for my lunch, but my friend who does enjoy fish raved about it. The square was absolutely full of pigeons trying to steal food. A few Children screamed at and chased the pigeons which was actually extremely helpful and worth the noise.
Mestna Kavarna
A cafe offering a truly delightful tiramisu.
